Most of the law on naming children, registering changes to children's names and changing birth registration details can be found in the BDMR Act. In addition, the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages website at http://online.justice.vic.gov.au is a useful source of information.
Most of the law on changing names generally is still common law (see: "Where does the law come from", in Chapter 1*1 The Legal System, for an explanation on the difference between common law and statute law). For Family Court and Federal Magistrates Court decisions, see Family Law Case Reports. For change of name upon adoption orders, see section 56 of the Adoption Act. See also the Schedule to the BDMR Act for other Acts relevant to changes of name.
