Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service Co-operative Limited (VALS)

Services provided

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service Co-operative Limited (VALS) provides a legal service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who need a criminal, family or civil lawyer. Offices are open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm. An after-hours telephone service is available on weekdays, on the weekend and public holidays, by calling the Melbourne office on 9419 3888 or 1800 064 865.

VALS employs solicitors, support staff, client service officers and education, project and research staff. Most cases are handled completely by VALS staff, although in country areas a local solicitor may be asked to act on behalf of VALS clients.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Melbourne should contact either the head office in Fitzroy in person or telephone 9419 3888 or 1800 064 865. Country residents may telephone the Fitzroy office or their local VALS. See Legal services that can help, for a full listing of VALS offices.

Eligibility

The service is available to all persons of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. The service is available to those people who meet the requirements of the means test.
