Private lawyers

Many private lawyers do legal aid work if VLA provides legal assistance. In these circumstances, VLA pays the lawyer. Ask about applying for legal assistance when you make an appointment, and find out as soon as possible whether the application has been granted.

The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) operates the Find a Lawyer Legal Referral Service, which provides free referrals to LIV members who practise in specific areas of law and will provide the first 30 minutes free of charge. Normal fees will be charged after the first 30 minutes, or if additional work needs to be done on your behalf.

Referral can be obtained either by:

phoning 9609 9311, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm; or

filling in an online form available at www.liv.asn.au/referral.aspx.
